President

Dr Eloísa Monteoliva García joined the department of Language and Linguistic Science in 2023, having previously worked as an assistant professor of Spanish (Translation and Interpreting) at Heriot-Watt University (Edinburgh) and John Jay College of Criminal Justice (CUNY, New York City). I am currently Director of Professional Language Training at the Language and Linguistic Science Department, a role that includes directing the Institution-Wide Language Provision and leading on the introduction of Translation and Interpreting Studies at the Language and Linguistic Science Department.

Vice-President

Dr Joseph Lambert is a Senior Lecturer in Translation Studies and Director of the MA Translation Studies at Cardiff University. His primary areas of research interest are the ethics of translation and sustainability in the translation industry. In 2023, he published the textbook Translation Ethics and he has written widely on the translation profession, questions of pay, status, and regulation in the UK, and translation codes of ethics. His current research includes projects exploring the related themes of working conditions, ethics, and wellbeing among translators.

Secretary

Dr Harrington Fernández is Assistant Professor at Heriot Watt University. He teaches Spanish, translation, interpreting, and linguistics. His main research area is translation studies, with a particular interest in literary translation, reader response, and how identities are reconstituted or distorted by the translation process. His latest project explores the translation process within a cognitive framework to shed light on how translation decisions can be explained with theory of mind.

Treasurer

Dr Jun Yang is a Lecturer in Translation and Director of BA Modern Languages, Translation and Interpreting and BA English-Chinese Translation and Interpreting at Swansea University, UK. She teaches theories in translation, computer-assisted translation, audiovisual translation, and English-Chinese translation practices. She is also a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. Her research centres on online collaborative translation which broadly includes crowdsourcing translation and fan translation.

Communications Officer

Dr Chen-En (Ted) Ho is a Senior Lecturer in Translation and Interpreting and member of the Centre for Translation (CTI) and Interpreting at Queen’s University Belfast. He teaches both the theoretical and practical sides of interpreting, coordinates work placements, and liaises with industry partners for CTI. His research currently focuses on investigating the cognitive aspects of sight interpreting/translation (SiT) using an eye-tracker and improving student motivation and engagement and facilitating autonomous learning by incorporating the concepts of gamification into teaching and learning design.

Dr Xi Wang is a Lecturer in Translation Studies at the University of Bristol. She teaches computer-assisted translation, audiovisual translation, and subtitling. She is an Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. Her primary research areas of interest are audiovisual translation and media accessibility, with a focus on audio description, assistive technologies, audience reception, universal access, and accessibility in museum and garden settings.

Dr Qi Zhang is an assistant professor in School of Applied Language and Intercultural Studies at Dublin City University. She received her B.A. in Chinese Language and Literature at Sun Yat-sen University, P. R. China, M.A. in Translation at Durham University and Ph.D. in Linguistics at Newcastle University. She is also a member of CTTS (Centre for Translation and Textual Studies), a committee member of IRAAL (Irish Association of Applied Linguistics) and a committee member of IrishRSA (Research Staff Association). Her teaching focuses on ecomonic translation and scientific/technical translation (Chinese-English). She has authored approximately thirty refereed articles and book chapters on Chinese language education, including language attitudes and translation in language pedagogy.

Dr Séverine Hubscher-Davidson is Senior Lecturer in Translation Studies and Head of Translation at the Open University, where she leads the MA in Translation. Prior to joining the OU in 2016, she held lectureships at Aston University and the University of Salford. Her research interests centre on translation psychology and, more specifically, emotion-eliciting aspects of the translation profession and intercultural work.

Lecturer in Translating and Interpreting in the School of Modern Languages at Newcastle University

Dr María Sánchez-Ortíz is a Senior Lecturer in Translation and Interpreting Studies. She is the programme director of the MSc in Translation Studies and the MSc in Translation and Interpreting Studies at the University of Aberdeen. Prior to joining the University of Aberdeen in 2016, she held lectureships at the University of Salford and the University of Bradford. Her research interests fall in the areas of Translation Studies; Literary Translation; Interpreting Studies; Audio-visual Translation and Translator and Interpreter Training.

I am currently Assistant Professor in Chinese Interpreting in the Department of Modern
Languages, University of Birmingham, UK. Prior to joining the University of Birmingham, I
taught translation at Hang Seng University of Hong Kong , Beijing Normal University-Baptist
University of Hong Kong, United International College, the Chinese University of Hong Kong,
Open University of Hong Kong, amongst others.
A published translator, I have translated over ten books on religion, health and finance. My
current research focuses on the translatability of religious dimensions in English literature,
including Shakespeare.
